Disappointment as popular Cleethorpes store goes up to let

The unit which houses The Works on St Peter’s Avenue, Cleethorpes, has been advertised as to let, with the store saying it is doing “all we can to retain a presence in the town.”

A series of closures by major retailers in recent months including Boots, Wilko and Clinton Cards demonstrates that many UK high-street chains are struggling to survive.

At least four other The Works stores have already closed in recent months.

Although negotiations are underway, the unit which houses the St Peter’s Avenue branch is up to let from Tuesday 21 May. If negotiations are unsuccessful and the store closes, members of staff are expected to be moved to other nearby stores to avoid redundancies.

A spokesperson for The Works said: “We are currently in negotiations with our landlord regarding our store in Cleethorpes and would like to reassure customers that we’re doing all we can to retain a presence in the town.”

The update comes after Grimsby’s The Works store relocated to a larger unit within Freshney Place amid an ongoing regeneration project, meaning when the Cleethorpes store closes, Grimsby will be the closest branch.

The Works have been contacted for a statement, but were unable to provide one at the time of publication.

Correction: Gi Grimsby News has amended its statement as of 19/2/24, after we received additional details from The Works.
