Cleethorpes school to undergo ambitious rebuild

Plans to demolish and rebuild part of Beacon Academy in Cleethorpes have been approved. Under the new plans, the school would be able to admit more pupils after being oversubscribed for years.

The new facility, which will include a three storey main building with sports hall, dining hall, classrooms, and educational facilities, would mean 125 additional children could be admitted, accommodating 750 students instead of 625.

The school is one of 50 nationwide which has been selected by the Department for Education to be part of the School Rebuilding Programme.

Speaking in September 2023, Headteacher Jason Thurley said it was an “extremely exciting” time for the Academy. “We had really positive feedback from a public consultation we did earlier in the year,” he said.

He continued: “We are grateful for the funding from North East Lincolnshire Council and the Department for Education that will provide fabulous facilities for our students. The school’s oversubscribed for Year 7 entry this month (September) and has been for the past three years.

“The proposal will allow us to increase in size and offer a wider curriculum but, at the same time, remain a relatively small school. While it is teachers who deliver outstanding education, the learning environment undoubtedly helps. We have invested in the existing buildings over recent years but the reality is this is a 1950s building over a sprawling site.”

The project is expected to be finished by October 2025.
