BBC to document story of Grimsby man who was wrongly imprisoned for 17 years

BBC 2 has released plans for a documentary following the story of Grimsby man Andrew Malkinson, who served 17 years in prison for a rape he did not commit.

Mr Malkinson was arrested on August 2 2003, two weeks after an assault and attempted murder in Salford, Manchester. He was ultimately convicted of rape and assault. In December 2020, after 17 years in prison, Malkinson was released on a strict life licence.

Last year, after two decades of suffering and fighting against the charges and after new DNA evidence emerged, Malkinson stepped into a court room to hear that the conviction had finally been overturned. He left the courtroom free of a criminal record and no longer bound by the conditions of his previous licence.

An independent report was launched into the handling of the case, resulting in the chairman of the Criminal Cases Review Commission, Helen Pitcher OBE, offering Malkinson an ‘unreserved apology’. Andrew Malkinson criticised the move, stating that the time to apologise was when he was exonerated.

Now, his life is set to become the subject of an hour-long BBC 2 documentary titled ‘The Wrong Man: 17 Years Behind Bars’, examining the devastating effects of his wrongful imprisonment.

The program will be available on BBC Two at 9PM on Thursday 6 June.
