Alternative Market at Yardbirds hailed as a success

Yesterday, June 9th, saw the launch of the first “Alternative Market” at Yardbirds Rock Club in Grimsby, brought to visitors by Out of the Ordinary.

Gi Grimsby News attended the market, which was described as a “market full of weird, wonderful, quirky” traders and products.

We spoke with Vicky, who organised the event, who explained that she started these markets in 2022 and “did a couple at the old Wonderland building and the Beachcomber in Cleethorpes”, which were well received but less “alternative”.

With the goal of becoming more “alternative”, Vicky began scouting for venues and decided to go with Yardbirds Rock Club, as it was a “regular haunt” for her.

“I was looking for a venue that fit the theme and style we wanted to bring. We just wanted a place where everyone was welcome, everyone could feel themselves, and everyone could feel at home”, Vicky said.

Talks are currently ongoing for a “Halloween-themed” market later this year, with fancy dress, more entertainment, and, of course, more alternative stalls.

Gi Grimsby News spoke with one of the stall owners, Martin, who explained how he had started his small business in the lockdown with his wife and how they both make everything they sell.

Martin said, “This is the first market that we’ve done with it being an ‘alternative’ market. It’s more our scene, with our focus on rock bands and music. It’s been a really good turnout.”

We also spoke with Jemma Smith, the manager of the venue, who added: “The turnout has been amazing. It’s more than what we thought we’d get for a first event, and we will definitely look at hosting again in the future.”
