Grimsby man jailed after breaking into elderly woman’s home

A Grimsby man has been jailed after forcing his way into an elderly woman’s home before stealing her handbag.

43-year-old Neil Hunter appeared at Grimsby Crown Court on Monday, 17 June, where he pleaded guilty to burglary and was jailed for five years.

On Monday 3 April 20214 at around 7.30am Hunter is said to have attended an address in the Littlefield area of Grimsby and asked the elderly resident a question.

He then pushed past her, forcing his way into the property and distracting the woman with a further question, before taking her handbag which contained her purse and cash. He then fled the scene.

The woman was not injured but was left shaken by the incident.

Detective Sergeant Terry Mellors said: “Hunter is a deceitful criminal who targeted a vulnerable member of our community and stole her personal belongings for his own personal gain.

“I am reassured that he is now facing time behind bars for his crime, and I hope this brings some reassurance to the victim that he is unable to target anybody else with his cruel offending.

“I wish to thank the victim for the bravery that she has shown since the burglary, both through the investigative process and the court proceedings.

“Nobody should be made to feel afraid in their own home and we take all reports of this nature incredibly seriously.

“To anyone considering committing offences of a similar nature, please take this result as a warning. If you do, we will catch up with you and we will do everything we can to put you before the courts.”
