Work to create new accessible play area nears completion

Work to create an accessible play area at Grimsby’s Grant Thorold Park is almost complete.

The project is a tribute to 12-year-old local boy Sam Blessington, who passed away only in 2016, having suffered severe brain damage shortly after birth. Sam lived with complications from quadriplegia cerebral palsy and associated health problems his whole life.

Grandmother Jean Blessington begun fundraising to create a play park in memory of Sam, who she explained loved nothing more than playing with his friends and siblings. Jean said she believes that if an inclusive play park had been available at the time, Sam would have loved it.

The revamp began earlier this year after East Marsh Ward Councillors managed to secure additional Council funding.

Speaking at the time Councillor Nicola Aisthorpe said: “It is hoped that this play area will allow young people to experience the same sense of joy and belonging that Sam found in his moments of play.”
