Former maze site repurposed for Armed Forces Weekend

The site of the former hedge maze has been repurposed to make space for additional stalls for this year’s Armed Forces Weekend event.

The hedge maze, which was located in the Pier Gardens, was removed earlier this month in a controversial move which sparked a row between residents, Councillors and North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC).

Cleethorpes Pier Gardens is one of three key spaces which are being improved thanks to a £18.4m Levelling Up Grant. The Market Place and Sea Road site will also be transformed. According to NELC, the Pier Gardens will be home to a new play area and events space now that the maze has been removed. As an example of how this might look, the site is currently being used to house stalls for Armed Forces Weekend.

While the action has proved largely unpopular, NELC has defended the removal, citing factors such as antisocial behaviour, and stating that the decision was in line with feedback from public consultations.
