Update after armed police respond to incident on Cleethorpes bus

Police have issued a statement after armed officers were deployed in Cleethorpes during Armed Forces Weekend celebrations yesterday, Saturday 29 June.

Residents in the North Sea Lane / Kings Road area reported a significant police presence shortly before 2PM, when armed officers were seen responding to a call from a member of the public who believed they had seen a man in possession of what they thought might have been a gun whilst travelling on a bus.

Upon arrival, police conducted a number of lines of enquiry, including a thorough search of the bus and surrounding area as well as CCTV checks to try and identify any cause for concern, however no weapon was found.

Community Patrol Inspector John Roberts said: “We believe this to have been a call with good intent. There were no further reports received and following enquiries, it was established the area was safe with no threat or risk to the public.

“We will always take reports of this nature seriously and would like to thank those in the area for their patience and understanding whilst we dealt with the incident, particularly for those who are attending Armed Forces Weekend. Officers remain in the area as part of our plans to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable Armed Forces Weekend.”
