Cleethorpes’ temporary toilets ‘deliberately’ destroyed

Humberside Fire and Rescue were called to Alexandra Road in Cleethorpes in the early hours of this morning, Tuesday 2 July, after several of the temporary toilets in the resort were set alight.

Firefighters arrived on scene at around 02:55 to find three portaloos on fire at the Pier Gardens. The incident has resulted in a melted pool of plastic and several damaged toilets being left behind.

The toilets were installed to accommodate the influx of visitors during the summer months, and have only been in place for around a week as a replacement for the Sea Road toilet block which is currently being demolished.

While many of the toilets remain intact, one has been completely destroyed and another two and a bin have been badly damaged. Another has been tipped over into nearby bushes.

Humberside Fire and Rescue have since determined that the facilities were deliberately set on fire.

A spokesperson said: “We received a call at 2.55am to three Portaloo’s on fire at Pier Gardens, Cleethorpes. Crews were quick to arrive and used one hose reel to swiftly put it out. The cause has been determined as deliberate ignition.”

A spokesperson for North East Lincolnshire Council added: “We’re aware of the ASB that’s led to several of the toilets being burned, with two completely destroyed and two badly damaged. This has been reported to the police and we are working to get the site cleared up and facilities restored.

“If anyone knows anything about the incident, please call the police on 101, referencing crime number 24000092498.”
