Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue issues plea to local anglers

A local wildlife rescue has issued a plea to anglers after an unfortunate incident involving a goose.

Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue shared on social media, regarding a Canadian Goose, that unfortunately ‘fell victim’ to discarded fishing line, which the rescue says is a ‘killer’ for wildlife.

The rescue elaborated on the case involving a Canadian Goose, in Mablethorpe.

According to the rescue, sadly the line had almost entirely amputated the lower section of the leg, and only a few strands of skin kept it attached to the body.

‘This poor goose would’ve been in immense pain, and his quality of life would have been severely compromised.’ The rescue said.

Not only had the goose suffered the initial fishing line injury on the left leg, secondary leg issues developed on the right leg due to the strain of needing to ‘hop’ to walk.

Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue stated the impact of ‘one strand’ of fishing line can have.

The impact of one strand of fishing line:

severe injury/amputation of the left leg—exposed bone

Lifelong strain and pain in the right leg

Social issues: attacked by other birds for being weak

Weight loss/dehydration

Poor quality of life

‘Please ensure that you do not leave line behind and if you see a bird with line wrapped around a limb, report it immediately!.’ The rescue said.
