Demolition works begin at Cleethorpes toilets

Work to demolish the toilets on Cleethorpes’ Sea Road is now underway.

This forms the latest phase of the regeneration project at the Sea Road building site which was levelled some years ago but has remained vacant ever since. The location is expected to be remodelled into ‘tourist destination’ complete with an information point and new public facilities. The three-storey building will also house a changing places facility, as well as commercially lettable space across all floors.

A spokesperson for the Council said: “It will include state-of-the-art public amenities and changing facilities, as well as commercially lettable space across all floors of the building, which may include different providers in retail and hospitality.”

The Sea Road toilets were closed for the final time last month to allow for final demolition works. The decision to close the toilets during the busy summer season prompted concerns from residents, but North East Lincolnshire Council insisted it would provide sufficient facilities for the period which included the reopening of the Grant Street toilets and the introduction of temporary toilets close to the Sea Road site.

Planning permission for the scheme was granted in 2020, but was delayed due to the pandemic, according to the Council. With final demolition works in full swing, it is hoped that the project will now be on track to meet the expected completion date of March 2025.
