Police issue appeal after toilets destroyed in arson attack

Humberside Police have issued a statement confirming that an investigation is underway after temporary toilets were burned down in an arson attack in Cleethorpes.

As first reported by Gi Grimsby News, Humberside Fire and Rescue arrived on scene at around 02:55 to find three portaloos on fire at the Pier Gardens. The incident left a puddle of melted plastic and several damaged toilets being behind.

Firefighters subsequently determined that the facilities were deliberately set on fire.

The toilets were installed to accommodate the influx of visitors during the summer months, and have only been in place for around a week as a replacement for the Sea Road toilet block which is currently being demolished.

An update issued by Humberside Police has stated that the fire is believed to have been started sometime between the evening of Monday 1 July and the early hours of Tuesday 2 July.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Enquiries are underway following reports that damage was caused to public toilets on Central Promenade in Cleethorpes sometime between Monday 1 July and Tuesday 2 July.

“It is alleged that somebody approached the toilets before setting them alight, causing damage.

“Anyone with information is asked to call our non-emergency 101 line quoting crime reference 24000092498.”
