Investigation underway after The Jungle Zoo targeted in arson attack

Humberside Police have launched an investigation after a report determined that a fire which tore through The Jungle Zoo in Cleethorpes was deliberate. 

Humberside Fire & Rescue and Humberside Police were called to the scene at around 11PM after they received reports of a suspected arson attack. The incident resulted in a large response, with at least police vehicles and four fire engines in attendance at the time. 

Firefighters managed to contain the damage to the site and left the scene shortly before 1AM. A police scene guard remains in place this afternoon, and officers are now investigating. 

Fortunately nobody was harmed. Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue also confirmed that birds known to occupy the area exited when the fire broke out, and that none are believed to have been hurt.

Humberside Fire and Rescue said: “We received a call after 11 pm to a fire in a derelict building on Kings Road in Cleethorpes. We sent 4 fire engines and crews were on scene until 12.45 am. Our firefighters arrived to a well established building fire, the incident has been labelled deliberate and we advise people to stay away from the area.”

A spokesperson for Humberside Police added: “Emergency services were called to a fire at a premise on Kings Road, Cleethorpes shortly after 11pm yesterday evening, Thursday 4 July. 

“Thankfully nobody is believed to have been injured as a result of this incident. 

“Investigations are now underway to establish the cause of the fire and anyone with information, that has not already spoken to us is asked to call our non-emergency 101 line quoting log 629 of 4 July or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
