This weekend will see Riverhead Square utilised as an events space for the first time since its £3.2m overhaul.
Work on the project began around a year ago, as part of a proposal to introduce green spaces and planted areas into the town centre, alongside new seating areas, additional lighting, security provisions and a flexible space to support events and activities.
A statement issued by North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) at the time said the authority had used feedback from the public to help “shape the vision for the revamped public area,“ adding that “the final plans reflect a desire to see a new public square to bring the community together with events and activities – the town centre’s ‘heart’, which makes more of its waterfront.”
Now the public will get their first insight into how Riverhead Square functions as an events space when it plays host to Grimsby & Clee Eats’ Street Food Festival this weekend.
The event will feature stalls from a range of local food vendors including Joellas, Campbells Cakery, Dough Bros, Grumpy Kitchen and Docks Beers.
Discussing the milestone, a spokesperson for NELC said: “We are delighted to see the first event happening in the revitalised Riverhead Square. With the plants and flowers now in full bloom, it looks terrific and will provide the perfect back drop to this weekend’s Street Food Festival.
“This is the perfect example of how we want the Square to act as the beating heart of the town centre. A place for communities to spend time with one another and enjoy whatever may be on offer.
“Since it’s opening, it’s been wonderful to see so many people sitting with friends and taking in the sights and sounds around them. Looking ahead, our wish is to continue this positive trend by providing the space for more events and activities.”
The event will take place at Riverhead Square between 10AM and 6PM on Saturday 28 September.
