Council backs football team as part of crime prevention scheme

North East Lincolnshire Council have announced their support for the Grimsby Sunday League team, Nunsthorpe Tavern Football Club, as part of the Clear, Hold, Build initiative.

The ‘Clear, Hold, Build’ initiative was launched in September 2023 with the aim of eradicating organised crime across the South Ward, including areas such as the Grange and Nunsthorpe estates.

In May of this year, the ‘clear’ stage of the initiative was completed with the announcement of several crackdowns on crime, where a number of known criminals, drugs, and weapons were seized.

The Council and its partners are now moving onto the ‘build’ stage, whereby they will be focusing on “helping local community groups to improve their wellbeing and the things that matter to them.”

As a result of the efforts of the build stage, North East Lincolnshire Council has donated football kits to Nunsthorpe Tavern FC to “help a group of determined young men” who are representing the Nunsthorpe estate in the Sunday League.

The manager of the team, Jamie Torrington, was “delighted” by the donation and said, “We are thankful to receive this sponsor from North East Lincolnshire Council. The players love their new kit and are proud to be doing it for the Nunsthorpe Tavern. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to get the local pub’s football team back up and running.”

Portfolio Holder for Safer and Stronger Communities, Councillor Ron Shepherd, added, “It’s great to see how we are helping local groups and teams through Clear, Hold, Build.

“Now Humberside Police and our other partners have worked tirelessly on the Clear phase, we are looking forward to progressing the other parts of this scheme.”

Councillor Shepherd continued, “We want residents to speak to us about their issues in the South Ward to help us best understand where our efforts need to be directed. This kit donation may seem like a small gesture, but to these clubs, it gives them an identity for the season ahead and allows them to represent Nunsthorpe Tavern with pride.

“This is just the start of our plans to help build on and improve South Ward, and I look forward to seeing what else the scheme can achieve.”
