A fundraiser has been launched by Target NEL in conjunction with Projekt Renewable following senseless vandalism that left a “trail of destruction” earlier this month.
Over £1000 worth of planters were destroyed by two individuals, with the plants housed in the planters discarded in the nearby river. This was “despite the fact the plants had labels showing the names and ages” of the children that planted them.
Speaking about the damage previously, director of Projekt Renewable, Richard Askam, said, “I am simply lost for words; the children are going to be devastated when they hear about what has happened. This act may have destroyed the planters themselves, but it will not have tarnished the memory the children have of creating them or the skills they learnt on the day.
“People may well be quick to say ‘well, what did you expect’, but if no one tried, nothing will change. We will keep replanting, and keep working to make our pocket of Grimsby something special for the very people who created these planters in the first place.”
Now, Target NEL, who works in conjunction with Projekt Renewable to bring activities to young children across the borough, has since launched a fundraiser to restore the planting activity to its former glory.
Joanne Lord, director at Target NEL, said, “During the six-week summer holiday, over 80 children from North East Lincolnshire, many of them disadvantaged or in foster care, planted these specialist plants to build a wildlife corridor along the Alexandra Dock area of Grimsby.
“Two adults have since vandalised these planters and thrown every single plant into the river. This was despite the plants having labels showing the names and ages of these children.
“The plants themselves were originally supplied at the price in excess of £1000 for approximately 300 of them. To replace them will be very expensive. We would also like to make an event of this and provide some food and maybe even a disco.
“If you can support with these costs, it would enable us to make this an event that proves what a fantastic community we actually are!”
