Police issue safety advice ahead of Hull Fair opening

Humberside Police has issued a statement ahead of Hull Fair returning next month, advising the public about remaining safe as the excitement gets underway.

Hull Fair will return for its 731st year on Friday 4 October. The event will run for just over a week excluding Sunday 6 October, ending on Saturday 12 October. It is home to over 250 rides, making it one of Europes largest travelling fairs.

To ensure the public enjoy the event safely, Humberside Police have assured the public that officers will be on site throughout the event. Officers, PCSOs, Special Constables, and stewards working for Hull City Council will all be in attendance.

A word of warning has also been issued to anyone engaging in crime or antisocial behaviour, with the force warning that those responsible will be “dealt with robustly

Chief Superintendent Paul Butler said: “It is great to welcome Hull Fair back for another year and support the Showmen’s Guild and other partners to ensure everyone has an amazing time.

“Hull Fair has been visiting our city for many years and is a part of our history, making it a fantastic event for family and friends across our communities to enjoy the variety of rides and stalls.

“Our teams will be at the fair every day and night to make sure that both visitors and workers feel safe throughout the week. Please come and speak to us to report any concerns or to tell us about your time at the fair again.

“Whilst we really want everyone who visits the fair to have an amazing time, I want to make it clear that those who come and commit crime or antisocial behaviour will be dealt with robustly by my teams to ensure that everyone else enjoys their time at the fair.

“If you have any concerns about anything you see at the fair, please come and speak with the Hull City Council stewards or any of the police officers who will be on the podiums as they are every year.

“You can also get in touch by calling our non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. If someone is in immediate danger or there is a crime in progress call 999.”

Humberside Police has issued the following safety advice:

  • – Leave any valuables such as tablets, jewellery and credit cards at home. Only take with you what you absolutely need and remember to lock all windows and doors before you leave your home and car.
  • – Consider using one of the park and ride services if possible.
  • – If you are driving, park in a well-lit, busy area and agree on a pre-arranged meeting place should you become separated from friends or family.
  • – Consider wearing clothes that have pockets with zips to keep your money and mobile phones secure.
  • – If you are taking small children to the fair, take a photo of them beforehand so we can see exactly what they are wearing should they go missing. Write your contact details on a piece of paper and put it in the pocket of the children that you are taking so police can get in touch if they find them.
  • – Just in case you need them, make sure you are familiar with the location of first aid, the police and the lost/found children offices.
  • – If you see anything suspicious, immediately report it to a police officer, PCSO, steward or fairground staff.
