Doubts have been cast over plans to reinstate a direct train between Cleethorpes and London after it was confirmed that the service will not resume this winter.
Back in 2021, LNER announced they would be consulting the public over potential changes to their timetable which would include the restoration of a seven-day-a-week direct service between Cleethorpes and London, after the route was scrapped more than 30 years ago.
Former MP for Cleethorpes Martin Vickers described the plans as “absolutely vital to attracting future investors to the area.” Local MPs have fought for the return of the route for decades.
It had been understood that LNER intended to introduce the route, which would run through Grimsby, Lincoln and Market Rasen, in December 2024. However, the route does not feature in the latest timetables, and plans have now been delayed due to unspecified “infrastructure issues” which require resolution before it can proceed.
In a statement, LNER said: “The industry is working to address timetabling, financial, operation and infrastructure issues before any service to Cleethorpes could be introduced.”
Tests were carried out last year to ensure the line would run successfully, and the milestone was seen as a significant step towards it being reinstated. However, these fresh delays have cast doubt on when or if a direct service to London will in fact resume.
