MP for Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes, Melanie Onn, has spoken of her disappointment after it was announced that the Post Office in Grimsby town centre could be axed.
Earlier this week the Post Office confirmed it would be considering closing more than a hundred of its larger branches which are making a financial loss. The Post Office on Victoria Street in Grimsby is among many listed as being at risk.
The update follows the closure of a number of banks in the area, alongside Post Offices in Immingham and Cleethorpes which have forced residents to travel into Grimsby for many banking and postal services.
Many have been left concerned about how the loss of services might impact the residents, especially those with mobility issues who may be unable to travel further afield.
Ms Onn said she is “urging” the Post Office to reconsider their decision and the impact it will have on the community.
In a statement issued to Gi Grimsby News, she said: “I am deeply disappointed to hear that the post office in Grimsby town centre is at risk of closure under the Post Office’s strategic review. This branch provides an incredibly important service to residents in the town, particularly older residents, and is one of the few remaining proper Post Office services in the borough.
“We must remember that the Post Office provides so many more services than just acting as a delivery and collection facility for post. They are a bank, they provide submission forms for passports, and provide things like travel insurance. Not everyone is comfortable using the internet, so we must ensure that there is adequate provision for these service in person.
“I am urging the Post Office to rethink putting the Grimsby town centre branch on the ‘at risk’ list, otherwise so many local residents will lose out.”
