Chesterfield FC has issued an apology after supporters and staff caused disruption during a tribute to the Fallen Mariners at last Saturday’s match.
The club, along with manager Paul Cook, released a statement on social media explaining that many staff members and supporters were unaware of the tribute taking place before the match.
According to the statement, the confusion arose due to a “lack of awareness” among both the crowd and the team. Some fans reported difficulty hearing the tannoy announcements and viewing the screens when the tribute was announced.
During the tribute, chants were heard from the crowd and the tribute was not observed by away supporters in the expected manner.
Following the event, Jason Stockwood took to social media to address the situation, saying, “I spoke to directors of Chesterfield FC who wanted to apologise for the misunderstanding around the pre-game tribute.
“They are a really good bunch who run that club, and we will ensure we communicate things like this more clearly in future.”
Chesterfield FC’s statement said: “Please note that many of the club staff and supporters were unaware of the Fallen Mariners tribute taking place before kick off in yesterday’s game Grimsby Town Football Club.
“They therefore failed to pay tribute, as they would normally do, due to the lack of awareness.”
Chesterfield FC Manager Paul Cook also expressed regret, stating: “I always go over to acknowledge our supporters at away games and I did this, unaware that a tribute was taking place.
”I am not a disrespectful person so I would like to apologise to anyone who felt offended in any way as that was clearly not my intention.”
