Councillors have voted to oppose a proposed nuclear waste site near Louth, following an East Lindsey District Council meeting.
The site is one of a number that has been considered after the Theddlethorpe Gas Terminal was ruled out. Nuclear Waste Services are now considering sites further inland, with the main contenders being Mid Copeland, South Copeland in Cumbria, and Great Carlton near Louth.
The update comes as part of a long-running saga, where Nuclear Waste Services are seeking sites for a new Geological Disposal Facility, which would involve burying radioactive waste under the North Sea via a tunnel entrance.
Numerous objections were raised at an East Lindsey District Council meeting on Wednesday, with many of them focusing on potential risks to the environment, issues associated with the transportation of radioactive waste, and concerns surrounding the impact on housing and communities.
Polls have reportedly shown that 93% of visitors to public information events are opposed to the plans.
Nuclear Waste Services defending the plans, stating that it would create significant opportunities for a local infrastructure.
