Grimsby’s iconic Ross Tiger has undergone maintenance to preserve the historic vessel.
The work on the trawler, which played an important role in the town’s fishing industry and is currently docked outside the Fishing Heritage Centre, was carried out at the beginning of March.
North East Lincolnshire Council confirmed that several areas, including the boat deck and walkways, have been given renewed coatings to protect against corrosion and prevent water ingress. Parts of the ship have also been repainted to improve its non-slip finish while preserving the vessel’s original appearance.
Work was carried out by Grimsby-based company Coopers Painting Contractors. Dave Cooper has a personal interest in the ship as his father, Skipper Dave Cooper, was captain of Ross Lynx, sister ship of Ross Tiger.
A North East Lincolnshire Council spokesperson said: “Recent works were to renew coatings to the boat deck and bridge veranda walkways to Ross Tiger. The previous coatings were a number of years old and renewal of this is to help protect the steel decks from corrosion and prevent water ingress to the ship.
“Cleaning and repainting of the lifeboat davit also took place. The repainted decks also have a non-slip finish that improves safety for staff and visitors to the ship and were painted black which is in-keeping with the appearance of the ships in the 1960s.”
The Ross Tiger was closed for a week while work took place, but has now reopened.
