Calls for improved lighting after sexual attack

Melanie Onn, MP for Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes, has launched a petition calling for improved street lighting in Cleethorpes following a reported rape near the North Wall.

In February, a 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of raping a woman on Fuller Street Bridge. He was released on conditional bail, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The incident has raised serious concerns about safety in the area, with many residents and the local MP highlighting poor lighting as a contributing factor.

Melanie Onn said that many residents have contacted her with concerns following the incident.

In a video statement, she described the incident as: “really shocking, and certainly not the kind of thing we expect to hear about in our towns.”

Ms Onn added: “Local residents have understandably been concerned about that, and are raising the issues about the lack of safety measures, in particular lighting, along the pathway on the North Wall.

“I’m working with Sidney Sussex councillors, the local authority, and police to try to improve those safety measures and make it much more safe and secure for everybody who is using this lovely bit of outdoor space.”

The petition is now open for signatures – you can find it by clicking here.
