‘Reclaim these Streets’ walk to take place in Cleethorpes

A ‘Reclaim These Streets’ walk will take place in Cleethorpes tomorrow, Friday 21 March, to raise awareness of violence against women and girls and promote safer public spaces.

‘Reclaim These Streets’ and ‘Reclaim the Night’ are national movements that have been campaigning for safer streets since the 1970s. The events aim to highlight the issue of violence against women and girls and encourage community action.

In North East Lincolnshire, the Community Safety Partnership has organised the walk to demonstrate solidarity and raise awareness of the issue locally.

Violence against women and girls includes behaviours such as harassment, stalking, sexual abuse, coercive control, and murder. In 2023/24, these crimes accounted for 29% of all reported crime in North East Lincolnshire.

The two-mile walk will begin at 7PM from Cleethorpes Leisure Centre. Attendees are asked to meet outside the centre at 6.45PM, where the Community Safety Partnership will be handing out glow sticks to light up the route.

Victoria Henley, Senior Community Safety Officer, said: “The aim of the night is to raise awareness of violence against women and girls and serve as a reminder that everyone can be part of the solution. In fact men and boys are essential in combatting this problem by speaking out against harm, challenging their peers, and being positive role models.”

The event is open to everyone, but children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
