Owner of North Sea crash ship files for legal action

A legal claim has been filed this week by the owner of one of the North Sea crash ships, as indicated by court documents.

On Thursday 3 April, the owners of the Solong vessel, Ernst Russ, filed a legal claim against the owners of the Stena Immaculate, Stena Bulk Marine Services and Crowley, after the two vessels collided in the North Sea last month.

The incident occurred at 9:47AM on March 10 when the Portuguese-registered Solong crashed into the at-the-time anchored Stena Immaculate.

It was later found that neither vessel had a dedicated lookout amid “patchy” visibility conditions, according to an interim investigation report from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB).

A separate legal claim was filed against the owners of the Solong on Monday by the co-owners of the Stena Immaculate.

After the filing on Thursday, a spokesperson for Ernst Russ said in a statement: “As part of the legal proceedings arising from the collision between the Solong and Stena Immaculate, the owners of the Solong have filed a claim in the Admiralty Court in London.

“This is the usual process for large maritime casualties and represents another step in working towards the conclusion of this tragic incident.

“Meanwhile, Ernst Russ continues to offer all necessary assistance in support of the ongoing investigations.”

Action is still ongoing, with both the Solong and the Stena Immaculate undergoing salvage operations and an evaluation of the pollution from both vessels.
