Emergency services and a local wildlife rescue have been praised for their swift response, which saved the life of a hedgehog trapped in a garden drain.
On Friday 11 April, Andrews Hedgehog Hospital received a call from a concerned resident who had discovered the animal wedged deep inside a drain on her property. It is thought that the hedgehog, believed to have recently emerged from hibernation, may have been searching for water when it became stuck.
The hospital’s ambulance driver was dispatched immediately. Despite the team’s best efforts, they were unable to free the hedgehog and contacted Humberside Fire and Rescue for assistance.
Firefighters arrived promptly and attempted several rescue methods. When it became clear that the hedgehog could not be freed using conventional means, the decision was made to dismantle the drain.
With the full support of the homeowners, a demolition began. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of all involved, the hedgehog was eventually freed and rushed back to Andrews Hedgehog Hospital.
The animal is now under observation and receiving care. Staff say they remain optimistic about its recovery.
A spokesperson for Andrew’s Hedgehog Hospice said: “This rescue serves as a powerful reminder of how vital it is to keep drains and similar hazards covered — even a simple mesh or makeshift guard can make all the difference in preventing such incidents.
“To the wonderful homeowners, the fire crew, and our amazing team — thank you for showing that kindness, teamwork, and a bit of determination really can save lives. “
