The Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, Councillor Philip Jackson, has said he intends to seek legal advice regarding a number of social media comments made in response to a recent article published by Gi Grimsby News.
The article, published on Friday 4 April and titled “Gi Grimsby News branded conspiracy theorists for challenging council,” highlighted remarks made by Councillor Jackson during a full council meeting in July 2024. In the meeting, he accused Gi Grimsby News and some social media users of going into “absolute conspiracy theory overdrive” when criticising the council.
The piece highlighted tensions between the local authority and the independent news outlet, prompting a wave of online reaction. In the days following its publication, hundreds of social media users posted critical responses to the councillor’s comments.
Councillor Jackson has now confirmed that he is seeking legal advice regarding several responses made by members of the public.
He has been contacted for further comment on the matter, and stated that any legal advice sought or action undertaken would be at his own personal expense.
