Melanie Onn, MP for Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes, has weighed in after North East Lincolnshire Council leader, Councillor Philip Jackson, announced plans to seek legal advice over comments made about him online.
As previously reported, Gi Grimsby News published an article on Friday 4 April after Councillor Jackson accused the publication and some social media users of going into “conspiracy theory overdrive” in their criticism of the council. The remarks sparked a wave of public reaction, with hundreds of users taking to social media to post critical responses.
In response to some of those comments, Councillor Jackson confirmed he would be seeking legal advice — a move that has raised wider questions about the relationship between public figures, accountability at North East Lincolnshire Council and scrutiny from residents and the media.
Now, Ms Onn has addressed the situation, stating that public scrutinies is “part of the job”, especially in the face of growing frustration among constituents.
“I’m glad to hear that no public money is being used for this,” she said. “But as elected representatives, we have to accept that public scrutiny is part of the job – even when it feels incredibly personal.
“While any threats or false accusations are completely unacceptable, I do think it’s important to understand where public anger comes from. When residents feel left in the dark on council decision-making – like with the unclear and rising costs of Corporation Bridge – it’s no surprise that frustration builds,” she said.
“I hope this prompts a proper look at how we can rebuild trust and be more open with local residents.”
