Supplies secured to keep British Steel furnaces operational

The blast furnaces at British Steel’s Scunthorpe site will continue running, after supplies were secured by the government.

It is understood the key raw materials, which are said to be coking coal and iron ore, are to be delivered today from the US.

According to reports, the supplies will be taken from Immingham Docks upon arrival, and taken to the Scunthorpe site.

The BBC reported Industry Minister Sarah Jones confirmed a shipment was at Immingham.

Speaking to the BBC’s Today programme, Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said:

“We have other shipments coming from the US, from Australia and orders from Sweden so we are in a steady state in terms of the operation of those two blast furnaces.”

It is understood the government is working to acquire a ‘steady pipeline’ of materials to keep the furnaces going.
