Lincolnshire man jailed for child sex offences

A Lincolnshire man has been sentenced to 19 years in prison after being found guilty of a series of sexual offences against two children.

Marvin Scampion, 48, was convicted of nine charges following a two-week trial at Lincoln Crown Court in March.

These included one count of attempted rape. He was acquitted of one charge of sexual assault after the jury deliberated for six hours.

Scampion was arrested in January 2020 after one of his victims made disclosures at school. Both victims gave evidence during the trial.

The court heard that between April 2008 and December 2011, Scampion committed four offences against a boy under the age of 13.

These included attempted rape, sexual assault, causing a child to watch a sexual act, and inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity.

Between January 2015 and July 2016, he was also found guilty of sexually assaulting a girl under 13 on two occasions, as well as two further offences of engaging in sexual activity while a child was present.

In addition, Scampion was convicted of one count of child cruelty after he produced a knife during one of the incidents.

Following his 19-year sentence, he will serve a further 12 months on extended licence upon release. He will also be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and has been handed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and a restraining order prohibiting any contact with his victims.

Detective Constable Caroline Pendell, who led the investigation, said: “This investigation spanned five years and a lot of work that started with the voice of two vulnerable children and has resulted in their voice very much being not only heard but listened to.

“Their courage, bravery and patience throughout the investigation with the support not only of their family but also the Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (IVSA) who were with them from report to court and the sentencing today. This investigation was very much team-centred with many agencies working together helping those involved to achieve this outcome.

“I would encourage anyone who has been subject to any type of abuse to have confidence in taking the first step and confide in someone whom you feel comfortable with, whether it be a friend, relative, sexual assault referral centre, or the police.

“This investigation has taken a long time, of which the pandemic played a part, as have backlogs with the courts, but it has been thorough, with no line of enquiry left unexplored. The brave young man and woman who attended court today have left as survivors and can now today start to rebuild their lives with the knowledge their assailant can no longer hurt them or any other child whilst he serves his sentence”.
