Dog walkers are being urged to take caution following a potential outbreak of blue-green algae at a popular nature reserve in northern Lincolnshire.
North Lincolnshire Council has issued a warning about the possible presence of the toxic algae at Ashby Ville Lake in Scunthorpe, advising visitors to “take extra care” when in the area.
Blue-green algae can become harmful under certain conditions. The algae are capable of producing toxins that pose serious health risks to both humans and animals.
Exposure to these toxins – through ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact – can lead to symptoms including diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, skin rashes, eye or throat irritation, allergic reactions, and even breathing difficulties. The algae is particularly dangerous to animals and can be fatal.
The council also reminded the public that open water swimming can be hazardous and should be avoided.
North Lincolnshire Council said it is working with the Environment Agency to test the water.
