A historic chapter is coming to a close in Grimsby as demolition begins at Top Town Market — a site that has served the community for generations.
The market, which closed in February, is being cleared to make way for a new cinema as part of the wider Freshney Place Leisure Scheme.
Construction of a brand-new, permanent market hall is also expected to begin in the coming months. In the meantime, a temporary market will be set up in the former One Beyond unit.
Last week, North East Lincolnshire Council confirmed that initial works had already taken place, including the removal of asbestos, the suspended ceiling, and much of the site’s mechanical and electrical infrastructure. Ground samples were taken to assess the site’s composition and support future construction, while archaeological trenches were dug to explore what lies beneath the historic market.
Full demolition officially began on Monday 28 April, and is now progressing daily.
Photographs have now emerged, showing the site as the work gets underway — check out this gallery from the demolition site…
