Plans approved to turn historic Haven Mill into apartments

A proposal to convert Grimsby’s Grade II listed Haven Mill into a block of 28 apartments has been approved.

The historic building, located on Garth Lane, was originally constructed between 1815 and 1821 as a mill and warehouse. It was expanded in the 19th century and remained in industrial use until the mid-20th century, later housing a pub, restaurant, and nightclub – these have all since closed.

While parts of the mill are still occupied by retail businesses, much of the building has remained largely vacant in recent years, attracting little commercial interest. That changed in 2024, when an application was submitted to transform the site into a residential development.

The approved plans will preserve the building’s exterior and original features, with certain areas undergoing historic refurbishment. The development will span four floors, combining 28 apartments with retained ground-floor commercial units – creating 32 rental spaces in total.

According to the application submitted to North East Lincolnshire Council, the scheme aims to “secure the future” of the landmark building.

The project is expected to move forward in consultation with existing traders.
