A nursery-aged child suffered a broken leg after being hit by a car outside Great Coates Village Nursery School.
Emergency services were called to Station Road in Great Coates on Friday 9 May, following reports that a child had stepped into the road and was hit by a vehicle. It is understood the child had just left the nursery with a parent when the incident occurred.
The road was closed for some time while police and paramedics responded at the scene.
In a statement, Great Coates Village Nursery School said the incident has had a significant impact on staff and emphasised how serious the situation could have been.
A spokesperson said: “On Friday at the end of the school day, a child leaving our nursery was sadly involved in a road traffic accident. The child, who had just been collected by a parent, we understand, sadly stepped into oncoming traffic and was hit by a driver.
“We are in touch with the parent of the child and understand they are now recovering at home with a broken leg. This incident has impacted all staff at the school and it could have easily been much worse if the driver was speeding. We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who stopped and helped at the scene and helped.
“We as a setting are committed to work with our local ward councillors to look at measures to prevent this ever happening to anyone outside our school again. Whilst we cant control what happens when children leave our nursery, we can look at ways to make the road crossing safer, and work with parents and residents of the village and North East Lincolnshire Council to make this happen.”
Humberside Police have been approached for comment.
