Great Coates Village Council has voiced concerns over road safety in the village following an incident in which a nursery-aged child was struck by a car.
Emergency services were called to the scene last week after the child reportedly stepped into the road and was hit by an oncoming vehicle. The child sustained a broken leg.
In a statement, Great Coates Village Nursery School said the incident had a profound impact on its staff and highlighted how much worse the outcome could have been. The school reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with local authorities to prevent similar accidents in the future.
Residents have also renewed calls for improved safety measures in the area, citing a number of previous incidents and near misses.
Responding to the growing concerns, Great Coates Village Council acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and the need for action.
A spokesperson said the council had received “many valuable suggestions” from the community regarding potential safety improvements, including speed limit reductions and traffic calming measures. However, they noted that any “appropriate and effective steps to improve safety and prevent future incidents” would depend on the full circumstances of the latest incident becoming clear.
Great Coates Village Council said: “First and foremost, we are deeply saddened to hear of the incident involving a child outside Great Coates Village Nursery School on Friday. One accident is one too many, and we share the community’s concern for the safety of everyone who lives in, works in, and visits our village.
“We are aware that road safety, particularly around the nursery and school areas, has long been a topic of local concern. While many valuable suggestions have been made regarding speed limits and traffic calming measures, it is essential that we now allow the appropriate authorities to investigate the most recent incident fully and establish the facts before any assumptions or decisions are made. Only with a clear understanding of the circumstances can the most appropriate and effective steps be taken to improve safety and prevent future incidents.”
Great Coates Village Council added that it remains “fully committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our residents.”
“We will be monitoring the outcome of the current incident closely and will work with highways officers, road safety specialists, and the wider community to consider any necessary measures based on factual findings and professional advice,” they added.
