A man from northern Lincolnshire has been handed a driving ban after being found to be 16 times over the legal drug limit.
In July 2024, officers were conducting mobile patrols in Scunthorpe when they spotted a black coloured moped being erratically ridden, with sudden changes in speed and heavy breaking. Notably, the bike was seen overtaking a police vehicle before slowing down to below the speed limit.
Officers followed the bike into Broughton where they requested the rider to stop.
According to Humberside Police, the rider, 43-year-old Andrew Newton, was visibly intoxicated. He was searched, found to be in possession of a class A substance, and arrested.
Whilst in custody, Newton was subject to drug tests which showed he was 3 times over the legal limit for cocaine, and 16 times over the limit for Benzoylecgonine – a chemical compound produced when cocaine is metabolised in the body.
Newton appeared in court on Friday 25 April, where he was charged with drug driving. He was subsequently handed a three-year driving ban.
A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: “The proactive work of officers and for Newton’s poor display of driving which lead to his stop, this has removed a dangerous driver from our roads. The levels of drugs in his system shows a complete disregard to other road users by putting himself and them at risk which ultimately would have lead to a serious collision which has now been avoided.”
Investigations into further drug offences are ongoing.
