Market to reopen in Freshney Place after four-month closure

A temporary marketplace is set to open in Freshney Place this week, offering a new home for traders displaced by the closure of Grimsby’s Top Town Market.

As previously reported, the original market closed in February to make way for a new cinema development, part of the broader Freshney Place Leisure Scheme. Since then, traders have been without a space to operate.

Now, a temporary market will launch on Friday 16 May in the former One Beyond unit, providing an interim solution until a new permanent market hall is constructed.

North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) described the development as “a significant milestone in the transformation of the town centre.”

The temporary unit will accommodate eleven traders previously based at the old market hall, including:

  • Birketts Butchers
  • Black Cat Books
  • Carl’s Meats
  • Cobblers & Keys
  • Girlie Gear
  • Graham Thompson Jewellers
  • K&P Collectables
  • Temple Ranch Clothing
  • The Card and Party Box
  • The Veg Stall (incorporating New Haven eggs)
  • Upsa Daisy florists (Friday and Saturday only)

NELC said traders in the old market were given options of moving to the new market, being supported to find a different location, or leaving the market, all with associated financial and support packages.

The market will open 9AM to 4PM on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Amanda Austin, Centre Director at Freshney Place said: “We’re delighted to host the market during this transitional period and are looking forward to welcoming their customers. This move highlights Freshney Place’s role as a cornerstone of the town’s regeneration – not only a place to shop and meet friends, but a hub of community life.”
