M181 closure revised for football match

A planned closure on the M181 has been revised as Scunthorpe United prepare to compete in the National League North Playoff Final.

In an effort to help ease traffic, a temporary reopening has been scheduled for Sunday 18 May.

A statement issued by North Lincolnshire Council confirmed that, following consultations with all relevant parties — including Humberside Police and National Highways — the motorway will open between 1PM and 8PM to support traffic movement on the day of the match.

A statement from the authority said: “The northbound carriageway on the M181 will reopen at 1pm on Sunday 18 May for incoming football traffic, and the southbound carriageway will reopen at 6pm to let football traffic leave Scunthorpe via the motorway.”

Aa full closure will be reinstated from 8PM on Sunday until 6AM on Monday 19 May, as part of the ongoing roadworks.

Councillor Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, also addressed the decision to allow limited access during the fixture: “We have been listening to the concerns of local residents, communities and businesses in relation to the closure of the M181 this weekend. Unfortunately, road closures are planned months in advance by all the teams involved, and it is not always possible to know what events may be happening in the future, so it is unfortunate that the closure for this National Highways scheme has fallen on a busy weekend for Scunthorpe.”
