Major redevelopment works planned for the Pier Gardens and Market Place in Cleethorpes will not take place this summer season, North East Lincolnshire Council has confirmed.
The council previously secured millions of pounds through the government’s Levelling Up Fund to revamp the Pier Gardens, Market Place, and the former Waves site on Sea Road. Initial announcements had warned of possible disruption during the busy summer period, with overlapping timelines expected for some of the projects.
However, a spokesperson has now confirmed that “work to Market Place and Pier Gardens will not take place during the height of the summer season.”
The update follows the recent cancellation of the tender process for the Pier Gardens project. At the time, the council maintained that “there is no risk to the progress of the Pier Gardens project,” adding that documentation is currently being revised and a new tender will be issued “as soon as practically possible.”
Speaking to Gi Grimsby News, the council confirmed that there has been no change in this position.
Meanwhile, the Market Place project has yet to reach the tender stage.
On the Sea Road development, the council confirmed that construction to transform the former Waves site into a new tourist hub with commercially lettable units is now expected to begin “later this year.”
