Council begins legal action over travellers in Weelsby Woods

North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) has confirmed it has begun legal proceedings against a group of travellers currently occupying Weelsby Woods in Grimsby.

This marks the fifth unauthorised encampment in the borough in around a week. Other affected sites include Orwell Street, Moody Lane, Kings Road in Cleethorpes, and nearby Sutherland Park.

The group previously camped at Sutherland Park appears to have vacated the area. Meanwhile, the council has stated that formal legal action is now underway to remove the group from Weelsby Woods.

A NELC spokesperson said: “We can confirm that we are aware of the new group in Weelsby Woods. We have started the legal process to remove the group from our land.”

Melanie Onn, MP for Grimsby and Cleethorpes, added: “I’m aware of the current situation involving the traveller encampment. I’ve been in direct contact with North East Lincolnshire Council and Humberside Police to press for clarity on the steps they are taking to manage the issue. I understand the concerns being raised locally and will continue to monitor developments closely to ensure that appropriate action is taken swiftly and lawfully.”

This isn’t the first time Weelsby Woods has been affected by unauthorised encampments. In 2024, a large group of travellers caused significant damage and left behind over a tonne of waste upon leaving, prompting North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) to install additional barriers to prevent future access.

Recent damage at the scene suggests the current group have gained entry by cutting through a wooden barrier in the car park.

According to reports, the process could take up to two weeks to conclude.

Updates to follow.
