‘Major milestone’ reached in Humber Bridge toll booth removal

A ‘major milestone’ has been reached in the introduction of a free flow toll system on the Humber Bridge.

Work is underway to replace traditional toll booths with a new free-flow system, the Humber Bridge Board has confirmed. Starting today, Thursday 29 May, installation work will begin on the gantry for the new system – marking a major milestone in the project. This development will eventually lead to the complete removal of toll booths for the first time in the bridge’s 43-year history.

Currently, drivers can pay the £1.50 toll either at the booths or through the HumberTAG system. Under the new scheme, payments will instead be made online, via a mobile app, or in cash at selected locations across the region.

As a result, the HumberTAG lane will be closed from 8PM today, Thursday 29 May, until 5AM tomorrow, Friday 30 May. All other toll lanes will remain open.

The new free-flow tolling system is scheduled to go live in Autumn 2025.

The Humber Bridge Board said it hopes the new system will streamline journeys and reduce congestion.

A spokesperson said: “This marks a significant milestone in the NTS project, signalling the completion of the first phase of civil engineering works that began earlier this year. Work on the NTS will continue over the coming months, with a full launch expected in late autumn.”
