Council issues update on Freshney Place car park repairs

North East Lincolnshire Council has shared an update on the ongoing works at Freshney Place car park.

As previously reported, the council purchased the shopping centre for £16.5 million in August 2022, at which point significant structural repairs were identified as necessary for both of its car parks.

Improvement works began in April and include concrete repairs, resurfacing, upgraded lighting, new perimeter fencing, and the creation of additional parking spaces. At the time, Council Leader Phillip Jackson confirmed that funds had been “ringfenced to invest back into the structure of the building.”

A council spokesperson has now said that work is “progressing well,” with surface layer repairs on the upper levels nearly complete. The next phase – focused on further repairs and re-waterproofing – starts today and is expected to continue until mid-July.

During this period, levels 5 to 10 of the East Car Park (near the Riverhead entrance) will be closed. Lifts in this section will be out of service, and there will be no accessible bays available. Accessible parking will be provided on Level 3 of the West Car Park, near Next.

Amanda Austin, Centre Director, Freshney Place comments “We understand this may cause some inconvenience, particularly for customers requiring accessible parking.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we carry out these important upgrades, and we strongly encourage anyone who may need assistance to plan ahead.

“Thank you for your cooperation and continued support as we work to enhance the experience for all our visitors.”
