Fire crews urge drivers not to block emergency access

Humberside Fire and Rescue is urging motorists not to park near junctions or directly opposite other cars, as doing so can block critical access routes for emergency vehicles.

Fire crews across the region have reported incidents where parked cars have obstructed their path, delaying their ability to respond to emergencies.

Firefighters emphasize that fire engines are significantly wider than standard vehicles, and inconsiderate parking can severely hinder access. They warned that in fire, every second counts – and delays can cost lives.

A spokesperson for Humberside Fire and Rescue said: “When our firefighters are responding to an emergency, every second matters and the way you park can make a real difference.

“Fire engines are much bigger than regular cars and need more space to get through. If you park near a junction or opposite another vehicle, it can block our way. We need at least two car widths to pass safely.

“When parking on residential streets, please park close to the kerb (not on the pavement) as this can make it difficult for pedestrians, including wheelchair users and those with prams, and never block driveways and drop kerbs. Every second counts. It could be you or someone you love who needs our help.”
