Demolition work at Abbey Walk Car Park should begin in the coming months, according to North East Lincolnshire Council.
Plans to demolish the structurally unsafe multi-storey car park – which was closed to the public in May 2024 – along with several council-owned units on Osbourne Street were recently approved as part of a wider scheme to redevelop the area into a multi-functional transport hub.
Exact start dates for the demolition works have yet to be confirmed, however a recent council update stated that demolition contracts are close to being awarded, with work expected to start “in the coming months.”
Costs published last year estimated that the first phase of work, at Abbey Walk car park – which includes demolishing the existing structure and replacing it with a new ground level car park, will cost around £3m.
The structure includes several modernist reliefs by artist Harold Gosney, which have been 3D-scanned for archival purposes. However, they are unlikely to be preserved in their original form due to logistical challenges.
