Weelsby Wood travellers ordered to leave

The council has applied for a court order after a group of travellers encamped at Weelsby Woods failed to comply with a previous request to leave.

North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) began legal proceedings against a group of travellers last week, after authorities received reports of five unauthorised encampment across the borough within a week. Other affected sites include Orwell Street, Moody Lane, Kings Road in Cleethorpes, and Sutherland Park.

In a recent update, NELC said it is doing “everything within its powers” to resolve the issue. They also confirmed plans for a clean-up operation once all travellers have left the site.

A spokesperson said: “The Council has served the notice of direction on the new group, which its members failed to comply with. The authority has now applied to the courts and is awaiting a signed copy of the summons. The summons needs to be served 24 hours before the court date. On receipt of the court order this will be served immediately on the group.

“The council wishes to assure you that everything within its powers is being done on this matter, but there is a strict legal procedure that must be followed. We can confirm the area will be cleaned once the groups have left the location.

“If anyone witnesses any ASB in the area, please report it directly to the police on 101.”

Just last year a group of travellers caused a significant amount damage and left behind over a tonne of waste upon leaving. As a result, NELC installed additional barriers to prevent future access. Recent damage at the scene suggests the current group have gained entry by cutting through a wooden barrier in the car park. It is understood the damage has been reported to the police.

Updates to follow.
