A new petition launched by Matt Stinson, Managing Director at Gi Grimsby News is calling on the Government to introduce rules requiring Cabinet Ministers – including the Prime Minister – to provide direct answers during Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs).
The petition emphasises growing mistrust in politics and frustration over what many see as evasive or incomplete responses to serious parliamentary questions. It argues that greater accountability and transparency are essential to maintaining trust in politics.
“It’s incredibly frustrating for the public when you’re trying to understand the Government’s direction and decisions, only to be met with deflection or vague responses,” Matt said. “People deserve clear answers to issues that affect their lives.”
The petition also calls for the Speaker of the House to take a more active role in enforcing parliamentary standards, ensuring ministers are held to account and that the democratic process is respected. It follows criticism from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, who accused the Prime Minister of repeatedly dodging questions about winter fuel payments. Reform UK have also raised similar grievances in relation to the Prime Minister’s failure to provide clear responses.
“The Speaker must enforce the rules to maintain parliamentary integrity,” added Matt. “This would help ensure PMQs fulfil their purpose — holding the Government to account and fostering public trust in politics.”
The petition – which can be viewed here – is currently going through parliamentary process and will be live shortly after. For automatic updates you can also subscribe.
