North East Lincolnshire Council has urged the public to refrain from lighting barbecues and bonfires on the beach, with a rise in incidents now causing “considerable damage” to the area.
A Public Space Protection Order is currently in place along the coastline, covering an area known as Cleethorpes Nature Reserve, which extends between the Leisure Centre and The Fitties. This means that people are forbidden from lighting fires in this area, as well as in parks and other council-owned land.
The protection order was introduced to prevent damage to the area, which serves as a protected habitat for many different animal species.
If breached, it can lead to a fixed penalty of £100.
Josh Forrester, Coastal Ranger for North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “We kindly remind all visitors that lighting barbecues and bonfires on this Site of Special Scientific Interest is strictly prohibited as well as being in breach of the PSPO. These activities not only pose a serious fire risk but also cause lasting damage to fragile dune habitats that support our coastal wildlife. Please enjoy our beautiful coastline responsibly – leave nothing but footprints.”
