Mystical tent lands on Cleethorpes beach

A mystical tent has appeared next to the Leisure Centre on Cleethorpes beach as part of the national Sea Like a Mirror art project.

Running from Friday, June 13, to Sunday, June 15, the tent hosts White Horses by artist Ivan Morison – a piece that blends sculpture, film, and music.

The project, brought to Cleethorpes by East Marsh United, is inspired by the 200th anniversary of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and also features local artists Lynsey Powles and Beccy Owen, whose works were created in collaboration with the Grimsby and Cleethorpes community.

According to the East Marsh United website, Beccy Owen’s We Are the Weather is described as “an improvised sound performance using music-making.” The piece features local children and young people, “capturing their ideas surrounding wildness, weather, mental health and wellbeing.”

Local graffiti artist Lynsey Powles spoke to Gi Grimsby News about her contribution, Shifting Sands, which includes a new sand art sculpture on Cleethorpes Beach.

“My part has been getting the community involved through workshops based in the old ticket office at Cleethorpes railway station,” said Lynsey. “The workshops have been for 6–18-year-olds and based around the sea and sea life.”

Lynsey explained that young participants explored the coastline creatively, adding:“we went round collecting shells off the beach and then making our rockpools. They were really good. We’ve also done giant seagulls, fish windsocks, sand art and ships in a bottle.”

“This is the first time I have done beach workshops, and it’s a different vibe from my previous work,” Lynsey said.

Reflecting on the experience, she continued: “It gives them confidence and helps with their social skills. You see the older kids helping the younger kids. They’re from all different backgrounds and parts of Grimsby and Cleethorpes, and I get a lot of ideas, as an artist, from them.”

Tickets for the free event are available here.
