Green-light for 18-bedroom HMO in Grimsby

Plans to convert a vacant building in Grimsby into an 18-bedroom House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) have been approved, despite concerns from local residents and councillors.

The application, submitted earlier this year, proposed the transformation of a former commercial office on Dudley Street into a large HMO. The approved plans include significant internal alterations, creating nine bedrooms, a shared kitchen, and communal living areas on each of the building’s two floors.

The proposal attracted multiple objections, with critics citing concerns over parking pressures and the suitability of living conditions. However, the council’s planning department said extensive work had been carried out between planning officers and the applicant’s agent to ensure the scheme met the necessary standards.

To address parking concerns, the development will include two bicycle storage areas and six off-road parking spaces.

The application was approved by a vote of five to three. Once finished, the development will be the largest HMO in the borough.
