Grimsby secondary school to create new SEND facility

Plans to refurbish two buildings and create a specialist facility for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) at a Grimsby secondary school have been given the go-ahead.

The application was submitted on behalf of Tollbar Academy earlier this year, proposing to transform Blocks C and J into a more suitable environment for SEND pupils.

The approved plans include converting teaching and office spaces with a single-storey extension with a dedicated entrance with ramp and level access, as well as a redesigned internal layout featuring additional classrooms, group rooms, and a deregulation space. The entire block will also be redecorated.

Discussing the project, Councillor Margaret Cracknell, Portfolio Holder for Children and Education told Gi Grimsby News that the project is part of wider plans to create 100 places over the next 3 years for children with additional needs.

She said: “We can confirm that two new Resource Specialist Provisions (RSP) have been approved by planning within the grounds of Tollbar Academy.”

“Both provisions have been approved by the Department for Education and aim to open in 2026. These projects are funded through the High Needs Capital Grant from the Department for Education, and will be managed by North East Lincolnshire Council.”
